Nia, a young actress, lives with her bed-ridden daughter, Gabriella, aged 14. Once, when Nia was on a film shoot, a strong earthquake almost destroyed their family home. At the time, Nia’s husband, Demna, and their daughter were at home together. Demna has a severe PTSD as a result of war and his enforced flight, as a refugee from Abkhazia. At the moment of earthquake, he ran out of the house, leaving his daughter behind. This has scarred the child for life. She has developed Resignation Syndrome to the point of stupor. When the walls began to crumble, Demna fled without looking back for their daughter, which caused the child to develop Resignation Syndrome. Nia severed all ties with her husband and moved out together with Gabriella.
After some time, Nia gets cast on the role of the heroine is a young refugee who escapes the war zone by taking a perilous cross-country route, losing her baby on the way. The role turns her life around. Acting into a situation of immense tragedy traumatizes Nia and makes it hard for her to separate fictional life from her own. Over time, she finds a way to forgive her husband, as playing the role of a refugee makes her understand the severity of Demna’s trauma.
“The writer tenaciously carries us all the way through the three main plotlines, intertweaves them, and what is very crucial – she is not afraid of sentimentality… This is the case when the form and story come together in a perfect symbiosis.”
