Cannibaliad

Author: Misha Bakhsoliani

The story is set in the 90s and portrays the blood and tears of Georgia’s withdrawal from the Soviet Union. In this dramatic period, Georgia lost its region Abkhazia, which remains under Russian occupation to this day.

Cannibaliad is the story of a family looking for shelter in the capital after escaping the war zone. This very sensitive fragment of history is told through a careful, dramatic, and emotional narrative. As the family settles in Tbilisi, the characters start to behave in bizarre ways. They open a restaurant where they serve human flesh.

This shocking but gripping narrative neutralizes the primal instincts of the reader to be upheld or disgusted. It makes one empathetic towards the characters after understanding how a dehumanizing experience can turn one into a cannibal.
