The Last Day of School

Author: Lasha Bugadze

Description:

Ever since his first novel, Lasha Bugadze’s narrative skill and in particular his unique humour shine. The Last Day of School tells the story of a group of high-school leavers in Tbilisi: students from backgrounds of varying degrees of stability who have dreams of varying degrees of craziness for the future. There is a female student Nincho who is in love with the 21-year-old violent criminal Nadrikucha. Her classmate Demuri, who takes on aliases to no avail in his search for a more macho-sounding name, has no chance of winning her favour. Demuri in turn is blind to Nutsiko, who can do nothing but vent her anger in elaborate secret rituals. The Tbilisi cosmos, in which everyone knows everyone else, in which tradition clashes with modernity and the Georgian version of the Mafia is part of everyday life, builds up the action and takes it to extremes, bringing things to a firework-like climax. A great pleasure to read, with moments of shock.
